WORKSHEETS: There is / There are

Let’s learn about the difference between “There is” and “There are“. We use “There is” or its negative “There isn’t” when is a singular noun. Therefore, the full expression would usually be “There is a” or “There isn’t a” if the next word starts with a consonant and “There is an” or “There isn’t an” if the next word starts with a vowel.

We use “There are” or its negative “There aren’t” when the noun is plural. Therefore, the most common expression would be “There are some” when the next noun is countable and “There are any” when the next noun is uncountable. And the negative form would be “There aren’t any” it does not care if the next noun is countable or uncountable.

To sum up, “There is a” for singular nouns and “There are some” for plural countable nouns.

Vamos a aprender la diferencia entre “There is” y “There are“. Usamos “There is” o su negativa “There isn’t” cuando es un nombre singular. Por lo tanto, la expresión completa normalmente es “There is a” o “There isn’t a” si la siguiente palabra empieza con una consonante y “There is an” o “There isn’t an” si la siguiente palabra empieza por vocal o H muda.

Usamos “There are” o su negativa “There aren’t” cuando el nombre que lo acompaña es plural. Así, la expresión más común será “There are some” cuando el nombre que lo acompaña es contable y “There are any” cuando el nombre es incontable. Y la forma negativa será “There aren’t any” dando igual si el nombre que lo acompaña es contable o incontable.

Para resumir, “There is a” para nombres en singular y “There are some” para nombres contables en plural.
